How much does anyone really need to know about Quentin Tarantino that can’t be derived from watching movies such as Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers or Django Unchained?

That was my attitude until a few months ago when I read Jason Bailey’s beautifully illustrated coffee table book, Pulp Fiction: The Complete Story of Quentin Tarantino’s Masterpiece. It was quite fascinating, backed up with voluminous details and insights.

DALE SHERMAN podcast excerpt: “I think fans like to go, ‘What if… What if Quentin Tarantino had done this? What if he had done that ‘Green Lantern’ movie. Or that ‘Luke Cage/Power Man’ movie? What if he had done ‘Casino Royale’? That’s one he really wanted to do. That’s a story in itself. This guy had everything laid out to go back to the beinning of the James Bond character and they told him ‘No.’ And then their next movie was ‘Casino Royale’ and they pushed the character back to the beginning! You can’t look at that and say, ‘They didn’t listen to what he had to say.’ They listened to him, turned him down, and got somebody else to do it!”

Still, after absorbing all of that, why would I need Dale Sherman’s nearly 400-page epic, Quentin Tarantino FAQ: Everything Left to Know About the Original Reservoir Dog?

Turns out there is still so much to learn, dots to connect, and trivia to be plumbed.

This guy Tarantino is one inglourious basterd. The books prove it.

DALE SHERMAN podcast excerpt: “As some fans know, Tarantino has… an interest… in feet. In ‘From Dusk Till Dawn,’ he’s sucking on toes. In his very first script,’My Best Friend’s Birthday,’ his character talks about having a foot fetish. There is always this thing with the feet! Once you know that — except for ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ where you didn’t want to see anybody’s feet — you’re gonna see feet in loving close-ups in most of his movies. I never thought about it until somebody pointed it out and suddenly it’s all there.”

What I particularly like about Sherman’s book is the way it groups information. There are chapters on everything from individual Tarantino movies to his legendary public confrontations, lost projects, and even product placements.

There is even a chapter about books on Quentin Tarantino. Talk about inside jokes.

It is, quite simply, a fun read.

And it’s not Sherman’s first; he also did FAQ books on the rock band KISS and films about Armageddon movies.
