Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of men who can say whatever they like about their brothers and step-brothers – but you can’t… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida!
If you only see one madcap road comedy about step-brothers this year – and you’ve already seen the one Will Farrell made a decade ago with John C. Reilly – check out Elijah’s Ashes, starring Ari Schneider and my guest today, Ryan Barton-Grimley.
Elijah’s Ashes has everything you could ask for in an indie comedy, including:
• A possible suicidal dad
• A straight brother and a gay brother who hate each other
• The straight brother having gay sex
• The gay brother nearly having straight sex
• A possible act of necrophilia
• And a prison short bus.
RYAN BARTON-GRIMLEY podcast excerpt: “In order to frame all of the stuff that my character, Kevin, was doing — so it didn’t just seem this diatribe of stupidity and homophobia — the audience needed to know this was meant to be absurd. The guy is an idiot!”
What else could you want? Barton-Grimley, who wrote and directed Elijah’s Ashes in addition to co-starring as the straight, obnoxious, homophobic brother, has put together a funny, un-PC movie that won’t be everyone’s cup of green tea, but I sure liked it.
This is Barton-Grimley’s second visit to Mr. Media; the first was to talk about his first film, the home invasion thriller, The Truth, which starred John Heard, Brendan Sexton III, and Daniel Baldwin.
