Today’s Guests: Daniella Alonso and Michael Stahl-David, actors, “My Generation”
(Note to listeners: We make every effort to post celebrity interviews in a timely manner. Unfortunately, ABC canceled its freshman drama, My Generation, after just two weeks. But rather than shelve this conversation with two of its stars, we’re posting it anyway because they seemed like genuinely nice kids.)
If you’re a network executive or a TV producer and you’re looking for dramatic concepts that could reach the widest possible audiences, you might consider common touchstones that bring people together.
So immediately rule out religion and politics.
DANIELLA ALONSO podcast excerpt: “I’ve always wanted to pursue acting since I was a little girl. But I went to an all-girls, Catholic high school in New York City so no one was really into the arts. I wasn’t too verbal about my interest then.”

What does that leave?
High school.
In ABC’s ensemble drama “My Generation,” the producers have taken the documentary format that has worked so well for sitcoms such as “The Office” and “Modern Family” and adapted it to the hour-long form. The conceit at work here is that a documentary filmmaker interviewed a group of high school graduates way back in 2000 — !! — about their hopes and dreams and is catching up with them and recording their lives as they really turned out in 2010.
As with your life or mine, the results are neither black or white but messy piles of grey.
Joining me today to talk about the show, which airs Thursdays at 8 p.m., are Daniella Alonso, who plays DC lawyer “Brenda Serrano,” and Michael David-Stahl, a Hawaii-based surf bum who just discovered he has a 9-year-old son.
