I last interviewed rock guitarist Bobby Friss in 1988. Something his father told him and he shared with me that day about being a professional has always stated with me:
“On time, in tune, and with clean hair.”
Such a simple, elegant approach to guiding a career and yet so many people – especially in the world of music – don’t get it and don’t do it.
Bobby Friss podcast excerpt: “Rock ‘n’ roll has been a great ride. I’ve had the ride of a lifetime. And I’m having more fun than I’ve ever had”
I don’t know where all of the other musicians I interviewed in 1988 are today, but Bobby Friss – leader of the Bobby Friss Band – is still rockin’ in the free world, touring the nation and playing as many or more gigs a year as he did then. He is sustained by the quality of his songs and the reliability of his credo.
Oh, and corporate support didn’t hurt, either, when, in 1987, Miller Genuine Draft began sponsoring the Bobby Friss Band alongside the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Del Fuegos.
Bobby asked to come on the show to talk about a special charity show he will once again host to benefit the Children’s Home Network of Tampa on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, from 6-10 p.m., at Quaker Steak & Lube in Pinellas Park, Florida, midway between St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida. In addition to the Bobby Friss Band, also playing will be violinist Robby Steinhardt (formerly of Kansas), Stormbringer, The Torpedos, Ronnie Dee, Janelle Sadler, Bobby’s brother, Ray Blade, and members of the Greg Billings Band And Highway To Hell. Legendary Tampa Bay radio personalities Russ Albums, Ron Diaz and Nick Van Cleve will be there, too.
