Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of blues fans who love the music but never thought about actually going to Louisiana or Mississippi to see it performed live … in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida!
When I finished watching Daniel Cross’s new documentary I Am the Blues, what I really wanted – besides an immediate trip to the Mississippi Delta – was a soundtrack album.
It is the sounds of this wonderful guide to the backwoods of Louisiana and Mississippi that will stay with you – haunting, electrifying and thrilling anyone with a musical soul.
Daniel Cross podcast excerpt: “Bobby Rush and Jimmy ‘Duck’ Holmes talk about the rappers and hip-hop. They’re all singing the blues in their lyrics about the struggle of surviving the difficulties of their lives. The beat might be different, but it’s still the blues at a certain level.”
For most viewers I suspect, Cross provides a first introduction to an aging generation of blues veterans that still live in the American deep south and that made their livings and reputations for decades on the Chitlin’ Circuit. These folks include Barbara Lynn, Little Freddie King, Lazy Lester, Henry Gray, Carol Fran, Bilbo Walker, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, RL Boyce, LC Ulmer and Lil’ Buck Sinegal.
I Am the Blues is available on DVD and via digital download from all leading on-demand platforms.
