If you’re a lifelong baseball fan, the kind who consumes everything there is to know about the sport, from daily box scores and summaries for all 30 MLB teams to Bob Costas documentaries to collecting newsletters from the Society for American Baseball Research, a new collection of rare baseball star photos may not be cause for celebration.

But what if the photos were yours?

ANDY STRASBERG podcast excerpt: “I was a very good friend with Eddie Matthews and his wife Judy. When Eddie passed away, I kept on my friendship with Judy. She opened up all her photo albums and said, ‘Pick whatever you think would be the most interesting.’ I picked that one (of Eddie coming out of the shower). She laughed.”

What if they were rare, previously unpublished candid camera shots of the game’s heroes, unfiltered by team publicists and the baseball card companies?

And what if the accompanying captions and memories were those of fans just like you instead of sportswriters?

That would be pretty cool, right?

That would also be Baseball Fantography: A Celebration in Snapshots and Stories from the Fans, written by Andy Strasberg and featuring a forward by Bob Costas.

Baseball Fantography captures real moments, such as a goofy Mickey Mantle coming on the field, the San Diego Padres on a school bus, Eddie Matthews emerging after a shower, and even Bud Selig smiling—although I think ol’ sourpuss just had gas. He never smiles. There’s even one of a well-dressed Babe Ruth and his daughter Dorothy leaving Yankee Stadium.

Not every shot is a gem, of course, but plenty of them will leave you going “Aww!” and “Wow!”
