Everybody watching the pilot of NBC’s new musical drama “Smash” a few weeks back figured that Tom’s assistant, Ellis, was going to be trouble for Julia.

But me, I saw red flags in her son, Leo, too.

C’mon! What teenaged boy is brought to tears because his parents might not want to adopt a baby as much as he wants them to? That’s c-r-a-z-y talk!

EMORY COHEN podcast excerpt: “I didn’t know this was gonna happen at all.”

Teenage boys are driven by testosterone, pushed by biology to be out making babies with teenage girls, not desperately urging their parents to adopt.

So when Leo became the eighty-ninth person on the show to find out that the magnetism between his mother and Michael was more than skin-deep, we could see the gears in his post-pubescent brain spinning out of control.

Ellis might think that he holds the trump card, having overheard Julia confess to Tom that she and Michael had enjoyed a long-running affair several years ago, but what he can do with that is nothing compared to what Julia’s own son can accomplish with such scandalous facts.

Sniff! Sniff! What’s that I smell? Could it be… blackmail?

I’m sure that Emory Cohen, who plays Leo, can’t wait to tell us what’s coming next.
