Janina Gavankar, actress, THE L WORD: Mr. Media Radio Interview

By BOB ANDELMAN

I honestly had no idea how popular actress Janina Gavankar was the first time she appeared on Mr. Media Radio, but the star of Showtime’s long-running “The L Word” caused quite a buzz. That show (CLICK HERE to LISTEN!) is still one of the most popular in our archives.

So when the opportunity to have the stunningly beautiful actress return to the show and catch us up on her career, of course, I said “Yes.”

Since the end of “The L Word”—and “L” referred to lesbian, of which Janina is not, but she played one on TV—she’s made a lot of high-profile TV guest appearances, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Dollhouse,” “The Cleaner” and “The League.”

She’s also shot parts in several upcoming movies, including Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey. Never heard of it? I suspect you will; it’s an animated film featuring the voices of both Captain Kirks (Chris Pine and William Shatner), as well as Darth Vader (James Earl Jones), Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christiansen), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), plus SpongeBob Squarepants (Tom Kenny), Seinfeld’s George (Jason Alexander), and Janina, of course.

Janina is also the guest star of the new, unscripted, online TV show from ACME Comedy called "Hollywood Dream Role." It streams live at www.acmecomedy.com tonight, Friday, January 22nd, at Midnight Eastern / 9 p.m. Pacific.

There’s no doubt that Janina’s enjoying that Mr. Media Radio bump, right? Let’s see what we can do for her today.

Hear it now!AUDIO EXCERPT: "Anyone who knows me knows that I am pretty big geek, so I was pretty excited to be a guest at Comic-Con to promote Quantum Quest. It was the coolest experience any geekgirl could have."

Kevin J. Anderson, ENEMIES AND ALLIES, THE SAGA OF THE SEVEN SUNS, PAUL OF DUNE novelist: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Bookmark and Share
If you create or own a sci-fi or other genre character or franchise, one of the top, go-to guys for a writer who will admirably adapt your property for novelization is Kevin J. Anderson.

Anderson writes the Dune prequels with Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert. He writes books in the Star Wars series, including the Jedi Academy Trilogy and Young Jedi Knights series featuring the twin children of Han Solo and Princess Leia. He also wrote three books based on “The X-Files” TV show, including Ground Zero, which I read when it came out back in 1995.

He even wrote a book on which he shares credit with L. Ron Hubbard that I’m curious about but not enough so that I want the Scientologists to come around pestering me.

And in his free time, he created his own genre series, The Saga of the Seven Suns.

Right now, his latest book is Enemies & Allies, a clever re-telling of the first time Batman and Superman met in the 1950s. A follow-up to his novel, The Last Days of Krypton, this one is a barnburner that brings in everybody you want from the Man of Steel and The Dark Knight families of characters.

Like most of Anderson’s books, once you start reading it, you won’t stop till you’re done.

Robert Hofler, VARIETY'S THE MOVIE THAT CHANGED MY LIFE editor: Mr. Media Audio Interview

Nobody asked, but here are a couple of the movies that changed my life:

The Out-of-Towners with Jack Lemmon. The first movie I ever saw at a drive-in with my parents. Scared me out of New York City for years.

Superman with Christopher Reeves. I believed a man could fly.

Serpico with Al Pacino. I saw a topless woman on screen for the first time.

Star Wars. I was lucky enough to be at the red carpet, New York City premiere. When that first battle cruiser went across the 70 mm screen, I never looked at mbies the same way again.

And then there was the first time I saw porno in a movie theater. I was working at the old Royal Park Theater 4 in Gainesville, Florida, and we showed Debbie Does Dallas at a 5 p.m. show. Good thing I saw that show; the police thereafter confiscated our print.

So that brings us to my guest today, Variety magazine senior editor Robert Hofler, who is author of a fun new book called Variety’s The Movie That Changed My Life.

At Least They're Not Cheeseheads (Wired)

"One of the things I like about our version is that the Galactica isn't one of the best ships in the fleet. If you tell stories about the elite, they have to be paragons. We said the ship was going into retirement and the crew were all castoffs and knuckleheads. To me that's an interesting show."
--Ron Moore, re-creator of the Sci-Fi Channel series "Battlestar Galactica," discussing his show's merits with Adam Rogers in the June 2008 issue of Wired magazine. (You can read an extended version of the interview here.)

"There was no 'Should I or shouldn't I?' I was fresh out of high school. I was worried where the next paycheck was coming from. And here was this amazing opportunity. It obviously came with a lot of baggage. I wasn't naive about that. But there wasn't any part of me that was going to say, 'Nah, I think I'll wait for the next one.'"

-- Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. He's featured in a Details magazine cover story by Adam Sternbergh intended to promote his new movie, Jumper. But Mr. Media came away from the story just feeling bad for the kid. The best coverage that Darth Vader can get is Details? Following in the footsteps of Kevin Federline? Really?
