Debbie Zoller, MAD MEN makeup department head: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Bookmark and Share

Emmy nominated makeup artist designed the look of
"Mad Men" during its first two seasons

Here’s what I think I’ve learned about working women in the early 1960s:

• They worked really hard at putting on their faces in the morning.

• They worked equally hard at taking off their faces before bed.

• They strapped themselves in with elaborate brassieres and girdles.

• They really dug advertising men and one—Don Draper—in particular.

I know all this from being a loyal watcher and fan of AMC’s “Mad Men,” now in its third season.

What I still don’t know is what cold cream is. For example, is it actually cold? Did it do for makeup what Mr. Clean Erasers do for otherwise resistant counter stains?

And what was with Peggy Olson’s fat suit in season one?

Joining me to reveal the secrets of “Mad Men” is three-time Emmy Award nominee for makeup, Debbie Zoller. She was the makeup department head for the show’s first two seasons and has since moved on to another promising new show, ABC’s romantic comedy, “Castle,” starring Nathan Fillion.

Debbie also did makeup for Pirates of the Caribbean, Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, Vol. 1 & 2, and Star Trek films and TV shows.

Shawn Hatosy, SOUTHLAND star: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Bookmark and Share
Shawn Hatosy stars as gang detective Sammy Bryant in NBC's new drama series "Southland."

You may have already recognized Shawn from his starring role as John McCain in the adaptation of the senator’s autobiography, “Faith of My Fathers.”

This summer, he will appear in Michael Mann's Public Enemies with Christian Bale and Johnny Depp. He also filmed an upcoming remake of the 1992 cult classic Bad Lieutenant, playing Nicolas Cage's partner.

And Shawn appears in the Justin Timberlake music video to his single, "What Goes Around Comes Around" — alongside Scarlett Johansson.

Shawn is a talent ready to break out big time. “Southland” will probably be the vehicle that does it for him.

It’s Pirates of the Caribbean meets “Lost.” It’s a man with the skills of MacGyver shipwrecked on a lush, tropical island.

It’s the new NBC adventure series “Crusoe,” and it may be the best new TV show you haven’t discovered yet.

Joining me today is Philip Winchester, the star of “Crusoe.”

Joe Pistone, DONNIE BRASCO: UNFINISHED BUSINESS author, ex-FBI agent: Mr. Media Interview

Bookmark and Share
My favorite book in the 1970s was Serpico by Peter Maas, the story of a New York City cop who seemingly single-handedly fought the force of corruption in the city’s police department. I read all the books of that genre in that era, from Supercops to The Valachi Papers and The French Connection.

One of the most fascinating parts of those works was always the tales of cops who went undercover to infiltrate the bad guys, from drug dealers to the Mafia.

No one ever did undercover police work better or with more distinction than Joe Pistone, who you probably know better as “Donnie Brasco.” Brasco became a household name in the 1980s as the undercover character played by Pistone, perhaps the ballsiest FBI agent ever. His six years undercover ultimately led to testimony that sent more than 200 mobsters to jail and – indirectly, several to their deaths.

Pistone was famously portrayed by Johnny Depp in the 1997 movie, Donnie Brasco, which co-starred Al Pacino and was based on Pistone's book of the same name.

He’s just published a new book – with Charles Brandt -- Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business, that fills in some gaps from the first book.
