James Maddock, SUNRISE ON AVENUE C singer, songwriter: Mr. Media Radio Interview

By BOB ANDELMAN

I didn’t know anything about James Maddock’s past when his publicist said, “You should check out this guy’s music.”

I listened and was drawn immediately to the rhythm, structure—and humor—found in Maddock’s songs on his second album, Sunrise on Avenue C. He’s got a strong handle on sharing his inner voice on softer rock and ballads—intense, ironic and somewhat bemused—that held sway over a listener not known for his patience with this form.

Turns out Maddock has quite a story to tell, too.

The Brit looked to be the Next Big Thing back in 2000 when his first album, Songs from Stamford Hill was released by Columbia. It had a song that attracted radio play, inclusion on the first “Dawson’s Creek” TV soundtrack, and he toured with Paula Cole and Train.

But it was all downhill from there and Maddock largely disappeared—until now. During the next 30 minutes, I’ll talk to the singer/songwriter about his life, his music and we’ll play a few cuts from his new release, Sunrise on Avenue C, now available on the iTunes Store. I think you’ll enjoy what you hear.

Mike Edison, I HAVE FUN EVERYWHERE I GO author and former High Times editor: Mr. Media Audio Interview

In his new book, I Have Fun Everywhere I Go, Mike Edison does for sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll what Hulk Hogan did for wrestling!

No, scratch that. Edison hates Hogan. Saying that will just piss him off.

How about:

Mike Edison does for sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll what Lennon & McCartney did for elevator music!

Damn, that won’t work either. Edison hates the Beatles, too.

Here’s a thought:

Let me just read the subtitle of Edison’s book. It’s so long, people will think it’s an introduction and not notice that I left out all the stuff about him being a former editor of High Times, Cheri, and Main Event, a contributor to Screw and Hustler magazines, and drummer in bands such as Raunch Hands, Pleasure F*ckers, and Rocket Train Delta Science Arkestra.

Please welcome my guest today, Mike Edison, author of I Have Fun Everywhere I Go: Savage Tales of Pot, Porn, Punk Rock, Pro Wrestling, Talking Apes, Evil Bosses, Dirty Blues, American Heroes, and the Most Notorious Magazines in the World.
