Darren Hardy SUCCESS magazine publisher: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Bookmark and Share
It’s a tough time to be in the business of publishing newspapers and magazines. But there are some subject areas that thrive in hard economic times.

Like Success.

Because while the sky is falling all around some of us, others see the silver lining in clouds and the word “opportunity” written everywhere they look.

To that end, I’ve invited Darren Hardy to be my gust on today’s show. Hardy is the publisher of Success magazine, a publication that shares with us the case histories of entrepreneurs that rise up above the fray and succeed against all odds.

Sam Haskell, PROMISES I MADE MY MOTHER author, Miss America Pageant chairman: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Bookmark and Share
Over the course of my youth I made a lot of promises to my mother.

Yes, mom, I promise I’ll bathe every day. And no, I won’t tell dad how the car door got that dent in it. Okay, I promise Ira will never know he’s adopted.

Oops.

But Sam Haskell took this whole thing a lot more seriously. He built a life and career on character and righteousness. That’s one thing if you’re a Scoutmaster, but he made it work in Hollywood as the long-time head of television for the William Morris Agency. And now he’s applying those same principles to the Miss America pageant.

Haskell is the author of a new book, Promises I Made My Mother, which takes those very same promises and wraps them around his personal life and career.

If you’re not in show business, you can be forgiven for not knowing Haskell’s name. But you’ll probably recognize the client of his who wrote the introduction: Ray Romano, star of the hit sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

Chris Hansen, DATELINE NBC, YOU MIGHT BE RICH NBC News correspondent: Mr. Media Audio Interview

Bookmark and Share

Apparently, there is something screwy with America’s many state lotteries. This Sunday at 7 p.m. on “Dateline NBC,” correspondent Chris Hansen and his team investigate lottery scams.

Hansen, one of the best-known reporters at NBC News and “Dateline NBC” skyrocketed to prominence as the host of “To Catch a Predator.” If you’re preying on underage boys or girls, you don’t want to see Chris Hansen taking the steps to your front door two at a time.

With this lottery investigation, why do I have the feeling Hansen and Co. found their way back to his old Tampa stomping grounds—that’s right, right here in the new media capital of the world—to find a story of evil-doing and weirdness?

Just a hunch.

Brande Roderick, THE CELEBRITY APPRENTICE NBC TV Playmate: Mr. Media Audio Interview

Bookmark and Share

My guest this morning is Brande Roderick—whom I’ve seen naked! Not just in my dreams, mind you, but in the pages of Playboy magazine, where she first came to national prominence.

A lot of women have taken their clothes off for Hugh Hefner, but Brande is one of just a handful that linger in your mind and establish an identity. There’s something in her face—maybe it’s ambition, maybe determination—but her eyes leave no doubt that you’ll remember her.

And I’m not the only one. Brande is one of the players in this season of “The Celebrity Apprentice,” Donald Trump’s annual festival of fawning and fables. She’s part of one of the most diverse casts yet, including Andrew Dice Clay, Joan Rivers, Dennis Rodman, Clint Black and Claudia Jordan.

(For more on Roderick, check out her social networking site, FinanciallyHung.com.)

Taking a Bite Out of Reality TV

Bookmark and Share
Not sure how many Ohio State Buckeyes can claim this distinction, but Florida, the University of Florida alumni magazine, says that the Gator Nation has spawned four major reality TV stars:

Kendra Todd, winner of the third season of Donald Trump's "The Apprentice";

Jesse Palmer, fifth season heartbreaker in "The Bachelor";

Christina Christian, finalist in the first season of "American Idol";

• and Emmitt Smith, winner of the third season of "Dancing with the Stars."

Michigan, meanwhile, is asking the judges of all four shows for a recount. And they're asking the Nielsen folks to recalibrate the way they tally the votes.
