BlogTalkRadio.com: Peri Gilpin: Bob ‘Full House’ Saget is America’s Smutmeister

Bookmark and Share

Could one man possibly be responsible for all of our nation’s salacious schtick?

Yes, say sitcom staples Peri Gilpin and Candace Cameron Bure – and that man is Bob Saget.

Interviewed on Mr. Media, Peri, who played Roz Doyle on Frasier, and Candace, who played D.J. Tanner on Full House, roast their pal Bob – who led the Full House cast as widowed dad Danny Tanner – big-time.

Discussing her TV alma mater with host Bob Andelman, Candace says:

“There’s definitely a place for shows like Full House, where, as parents, we can safely allow our children to watch, and not worry about whether they’ll be exposed to something that isn’t age- appropriate.”

That’s when Peri, who co-stars with Candace in the ABC Family series Make It or Break It, jumps in with this zinger:

“Wait a minute. What about Bob Saget?”

“Exactly. I grew up with that,” replies Candace. “I grew up wayyyy too fast.”

“Are you going to blame everything bad that’s happened to you on Saget?” asks our host.

“We’re blaming him for all the dirty jokes in our lives,” says Peri.

“All the dirty jokes in America,” adds Candace.

“I know Bob because I work out at the gym with him – and Candace was there, too, for a while,” says Peri, before whacking the final nail into the Sagat legacy:

“So I know Bob’s little ‘spicy act.’”

Mr. Media Milestone: 100,000 Downloads!

Bookmark and Share
Dear Mr. Media Interviews Listeners,

Yesterday, November 6, 2008, the Mr. Media Interviews podcast recorded its 100,000th archive download on the BlogTalkRadio.com network!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank the many loyal and new listeners who have spread the word about the show and contributed to its growing success. We joined BTR at the beginning of the year and saw a steady climb from May to September as we got the hang of things and the quality and number of guests increased exponentially.

By September 10, 2008, we reached 50,000 downloads; less than two months later, we had 50,000 more!

A special thanks to the folks at BlogTalkRadio for their support, starting with Amy Domestico, who invited Mr. Media onboard, as well as CEO Alan Levy and Philip Recchia, Hilary Leewong, Deborah Ng, Luke Armour, John Sweet, Shaun Omac, John Federico, Nikki Starr and Demos Yannikos, as well as supportive fellow hosts such as Dr. Blogstein, The Fly Lady and Friends, Olivia Wilder, Pete Williams, Collen at LSPC Reviews, I Got My Reasons, and Movie Geeks Unlimited.

Thanks, everybody!

Sincerely,

Bob Andelman

Alan Levy, BLOGTALKRADIO.com founder: Mr. Media Audio Interview

Bookmark and Share
I’m a lucky guy.

Last December, I received an email from a woman named Amy Domestico, inviting me to bring my podcast, Mr. Media, to a relatively new media site called BlogTalkRadio. We exchanged some emails and finally talked on the phone.

Up until that point, I recorded my interviews over the telephone on a digital tape recorder and uploaded them to the Internet and my web site, www.mrmedia.com. The system worked, but it was clunky and excluded listener participation.

I agreed to try one interview on BlogTalkRadio – on one-day notice. It was with the producer of a small indie film called Nemesis. I told him about BlogTalkRadio and said if it didn’t work, we could do a do-over.

Not only did it work, but he even convinced the star of his film to call in as a surprise guest.

I don’t think I’ve done an interview the old-fashioned way, ever since.

That’s why joining me today is one of my heroes, Alan Levy, founder of BlogTalkRadio.com.

Will Eisner & PS Magazine Discussion LIVE on Mr. Media, Friday, April 18, 1 p.m. EST

Bookmark and Share

With the announcement last week that Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries has posted complete scans for 145 regular issues, 3 special issues, and 14 index issues of Will Eisner's rare PS Magazine, I thought it would be fun to have the VCU librarian in charge of the project, Cindy Jackson, as well as the author of the upcoming book, Will Eisner & PS Magazine, Paul Fitzgerald, come on Mr. Media and talk about this little known period in the comics master's career.

As Eisner's authorized biographer -- you have read Will Eisner: A Spirited Life by now, haven't you? -- I certainly have a little extra interest in the topic. And with all the hype for Frank Miller's upcoming film, Will Eisner's The Spirit, the time seems extra-ripe for this!

Eisner drew and was artistic editor for PS Magazine from its inception in 1951 until 1972 and these are truly rare examples of his incomparable art work and direction. In an effort to encourage soldiers to keep better care of their equipment, the US Army hired Eisner's American Visuals Corporation to do a digest-sized publication focusing on preventive maintenance. Each issue consisted of a color comic book style cover; eight pages of four color comic continuity story in the middle; and a wealth of technical, safety, and policy information printed in two color.

Milo Ventimiglia, "Heroes" actor: Mr. Media Interview, Part 2

Bookmark and Share
(Return to Part 1)

BOB ANDELMAN/Mr. MEDIA: It must be hard for both the writers and the actors to be on a show where the expectations are so high. You almost reach a point where, no matter what you do, you’re going to let people down. Is that the case?

MILO VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah. You’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t. You just gotta know that, ultimately, the work that you’re doing, the work that you’re putting in, it’s your best efforts, and it’s everybody’s best effort. That being said, though, all those best efforts have to come together in sync. Otherwise, the show doesn’t have a heart.

ANDELMAN: Before the writers’ strike set in, how much did you know of plot lines for your character going in? And how much do you think that may change going forward with the delay in getting back into production?

VENTIMIGLIA: I knew quite a bit. I knew where we were headed, but I also had the luxury of not really having to follow too closely because Peter had amnesia. I went in for a meeting with Tim Kring before we started filming, and he said, “Peter can’t remember anything.” I said, “Okay, great. Let me know as I need to know stuff.” I just kind of waited around. Usually, you’re pretty eager to know where you’re headed. I had no idea where Peter was going to go, and it didn’t really matter at that point. Where we’re going to be going after, again, that’s all up in the air. I think the production team was taking into consideration the criticism we got and hopefully, wanting to get back on track to the same feel we had the first season. So I think things are going to switch up a little bit.

ANDELMAN: Is there any question whether you’ll stay with the show? Eric, who wrote in, said that he had heard rumors that you didn’t necessarily want to continue.

VENTIMIGLIA: Who said that?

ANDELMAN: Eric. He’s one of the people who sent in some questions for you.

VENTIMIGLIA: Really? I’m a real guy, and I also have a contract that I hope to honor. So I’ll be on the show, I think, as long as they would have me and as long as I’m obligated to it and put my best work forward, and I’ll leave everything else up to time. I’ve got other ambitions, but when it comes to the show, and when we’re in production, that’s what I’m doing.

ANDELMAN: Dr. Blogstein, who has a show on BlogTalkRadio, wanted to know this: “Are there considerations in taking a few episodes this coming season or next to go deeper into the back story and focus on your character’s parents as well as George Takei’s character and some of the older heroes?”

VENTIMIGLIA: I think that was our intent -- to understand a little bit more. That’s always been the question. People want to know how did these abilities come about? The way the show’s been going -- the storyline -- it seems that there was a greater mystery as to why these people, how these people have these abilities. Again, that’s a lot up to the writers about what they’re looking to explore. And, of course, the actors, we can give our two cents in what we’d like to see, what we’d like to get into, but it’s ultimately up to the writers.

ANDELMAN: Sharon wants to know -- and remember, I didn’t write these questions -- if you’re not dating Hayden Panettiere, who are you dating?

VENTIMIGLIA: Is my what?

ANDELMAN: If you’re not dating Hayden…

VENTIMIGLIA: My phone broke up.

ANDELMAN: I’m sorry?

VENTIMIGLIA: I said my phone had a little glitch for a second.

ANDELMAN: Oh. Okay. Sharon’s question is, “If you’re not dating Hayden Panettiere, who are you dating?”

VENTIMIGLIA: It’s one of those funny questions that…

ANDELMAN: I’m glad I didn’t ask.

VENTIMIGLIA: I think when you’re young and in this industry, and you work as much as I do, you try to spend time with people that want to spend time with you. That’s about all you can do.

ANDELMAN: Alright. Last question: Mimi asks, “What powers would you want in real life?”

VENTIMIGLIA: I think in a world where there are people with abilities, I’d take my character’s. He’s a sponge. He can soak up anything. But if I just had any ability, I’d want to be able to teleport. I could go have coffee in Paris if I wanted to and lunch in Italy, then be right back at home in the flash of an eye.
